MLO3 Reflective Narrative
MLO 3: LITERARY AND CULTURAL KNOWLEDGE
Students develop a reasonable understanding of the ways of thinking (ideas, beliefs, attitudes, values, philosophies), the behavioral practices (patterns of social interactions) and the cultural products – both tangible and intangible (for example, art, history, literature, music) of Hispanic societies.
There are two pathways by which this outcome can be fulfilled:
Students complete four courses in Hispanic literature and/or Hispanic culture. These courses deal with the cultures and civilizations of Spain or Hispanic America, the literatures of Spain and/or Hispanic America, The theatre and cinema of Spain and/or Hispanic America, the art and art history of Spain and /or Hispanic America, the music and music history of Spain and/or Hispanic America, the historical, political and social development of Spain and/or Hispanic America.
MLO Reflective Narrative
As part of my fulfillment of MLO 3 I have learned that we all have different opinions and beliefs, and we will never have the same opinions with others. Especially having different religions, ethnicities, and beliefs. Since each group has different ideas. Even though we all have different ideas, we should all treat each other with respect. And respect every point of view for each person. Some classes that helped in the fulfillment of this MLO were SPAN 370: The Chicano Community and SPAN 425: La Literatura Mexicana. In Spanish 370, I had the opportunity to learn about the problems we face in our own community. One assignment that was really helpful for me was the final presentation, in which we discussed a change we would like to see in our community. Since Salinas is a community where it needs a lot of development based on having a safer community. We all had different opinions on what change we wanted to work on. For this presentation, I decided to focus on crosswalks. The reason I decided to do this is that there are many crosswalks here in this community that are not safe for pedestrians. As a result, I learned that we could help by writing letters to our congressman to help develop Salinas. In Spanish 425, we learned about Mexican literature. I had the opportunity to read books from authors like Rosario Castellanos, Juan Rulfo, and many more. It was a great experience to take this class because we had to do a presentation about one Mexican author. I chose to do my presentation on Francisco Jimenez who is a Mexican-American writer. His books are so meaningful to me for the reason that somehow his book of Senderos Fronterizos identifies with my personal life because my parents also came to the United States for a better life for themselves and me and their future family. And the way I would work for this future to be successful is by working hard and achieving my goals.
